French President Sarkozy proposes taxing new technology to finance the old

French President Nicholas Sarkozy has announced a new policy proposing the ban of advertisements from the public television and compensating for the lost revenue by taxing new tele-communicative means, such as the internet and mobile phones.

Experts believe, this move can probably change the media scenario of the country. Popularity of the internet is viewed as a nation’s educational as well as economic growth and productivity.

Taxing a service, which is of benefit to the country seemed to be a wrong decision made by the French President and is condemned by many.

This tax on the internet connection is an unprecedented event and the Mr. Sarkozy acknowledged this in his speech on Tuesday. At a time when traditional means of communication, like the television and radio are losing popularity, giving way to modern means such as Internet, such a move is expected to further modernize communication.

However, in defense, President Sarkozy said,

I want us to profoundly review the requirements of public television and to consider a complete elimination of advertising on public channels.

To compensate for the losses incurred due to vanished advertising revenue he suggested,

Those channels could be financed by a tax on advertising revenues of private broadcasters and an infinitesimal tax on the revenues of new means of communication like Internet access or mobile telephony.

Those in favor of this move believe that the infinitesimally small charges wouldn’t hinder the growing number of Internet users, which is already higher in France than those of other countries. This proposal awaits approval by both the houses of the Parliament, after which, it can be declared as a policy which is expected to be by the 1st of September.

However, how successful this move will be in terms of French economic growth, is what we are eagerly waiting to see.

Oily fish sales shoot up as parents include it in child's diet to boost memory

Parents are always panicky about the right kind of diet for their children and select the perfect one based on the nutritive qualities that provide strength and boost mental growth. Medical journals are scanned to get the healthiest food options which are immediately included in the diet. It is this fad that has got the parents to include more of oily fishes in the children’s diet to help increase their memory and fare better in examinations.

However, for a change this inclusion is actually nutritious and tasty. Fish, especially the oily one is said to be high in the Omega-3 fatty acids that provide the body with the essential antioxidants that slow up the ageing process and boost memory. The sale of Omega-3 capsules has seen a major surge in the recent years which can be attributed to the increased awareness about its role in memory enhancement. But the parents have found a cheaper and more organic alternative to these capsules in the oily fishes which is its main source.

This has resulted in an increased sale of oily fishes like sardines, salmon and anchovy by about 23 percent according to industry body Seafish. Even the sale of the earlier ignored mackerel has gone up by 26 percent. The sale of oily fishes contributed by the health benefits is doubled by the variety of methods it can be cooked in that is promoted by TV chefs like Gordon Ramsay and Hugh Fearnley- Whittingstall. In addition to all these, even the Food Standards Agency has advised people to eat two major portions of fish every week one of which should be of the oily variety.

AIDS declared a 'global disaster'

AIDS, the word which rings disaster has been included in the report submitted by the International federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, which called on the government and humanitarian agencies to pay more attention to AIDS in their response to natural disaster and armed conflicts.

AIDS or Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome is a fatal disease that attacks the human immune system and makes it completely non operational leading to death. However, what makes the disease even more lethal is the stigma attached to it. Intravenous drug users, homosexuals, sex workers and prostitutes are usually the victims of this disease. This is largely attributed to the lack of information about AIDS amongst these sections of the society. Even after being diagnosed with the disease they are left untreated due to the fear on the part of doctors and nurses of contracting the disease. These people lack even the basic healthcare and preventive facilities which adds to their woes.

Perhaps this is the reason that the International federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent decided to term the disease a global disaster. With this they have taken a step ahead in ensuring better care for the AIDS patients and removal of some of the stigma attached to the disease in the society. Speaking on the issue Federation specialist Mukesh Kapila said,

Government services are overwhelmed by the need for support and treatment, stigma still prevents access for many, even where services exist, and communities are devastated by its effects.
